FND Aware NZ
As FND Awareness Day (25th March) is quickly approaching, I contacted our friends across the ditch in New Zealand to see what day was slated for them. After a great chat with FND Aware NZ and speaking to their talented people, Ellerem Star has assisted their lyricist TWSTD to create their own charity album. Surely two awareness albums are better than one? It is great to be involved with so many passionate people, all with the one aim. Raising awareness about FND (Functional Neurological Disorder). As you may be aware, our lead singer, Elle, suffers FND. A condition which steals her voice at times. That means we seldom perform live. It doesn’t mean our music isn’t great, personal and original!
The songs I wrote are personal to me, not just for Elle’s sake. My father suffered another neurological condition : Parkinsons. A very intelligent and talented man, my father was slowly robbed of his abilities. And all he wished for was to be normal. Not wonderful, not exceptional, just for his body to operate normally. Something many healthy people take for granted. Neurological conditions either make the body not respond or respond with unwanted movements and actions. Something as simple as swallowing becomes a forced effort.
Awareness is not solely about raising money for research. It s about treating people who have these conditions with dignity and respect. Some have bigger battles in life, their effort should be respected for they are true warriors.
